About the Talent

Beginning his cooking career at the bright-eyed age of 17 in Sydney, Australia, Mike never believed he would one-day prepare meals for such clientele as Julia Roberts, Tom Cruise, Bruce Willis, and Nicole Kidman.

Mike has cooked in some of Sydney’s and Toronto’s most acclaimed restaurants (Zigolini’s and The Basement in Australia, Prego Della Piazza and Shark City in Toronto), and has owned and operated several catering companies over the years. Throughout his career Mike has also shared his passion and experience through group and private cooking lessons allowing keen home cooks to develop their skills.

Mike has had a rare and valuable mix of both successful culinary careers, and a media career. In early 2000 Mike expanded his creative pursuits beyond restaurants to include producing and directing award winning cooking / travel / lifestyle television series that have been viewed in over 40 countries.

A quick survey of chef Michael Hunter’s Instagram account proves he’s passionate about wild game and foraged foods. “For so long, I’ve been working for corporate restaurants, and I can’t do that anymore,” he says. “I want to celebrate regional ingredients, and I want to be a part of defining Canadian cuisine.” Hunter and his business partner, Jody Shapiro, have snagged the Dundas West storefront that previously housed This End Up. As expected, Antler’s menu features foraged ingredients and farmed game (due to the restrictions on serving wild game in restaurants). “I want to be different and open people’s eyes,” Hunter says. “There’s more to meat than chicken, beef and pork.”

Rose is author of eleven cookbooks; the most recent Canada’s Favourite Recipes (co-authored with Elizabeth Baird) won gold in the Taste Canada National Culinary Writing Awards. Her tenth book, A Taste of Canada: A Culinary Journey (Whitecap, 2008) was short-listed in the National Culinary Awards.  Her ninth book, Hungry for Comfort, won gold in the National Culinary Book Awards 2004 sponsored by Cuisine Canada and the University of Guelph. Among her other awards are the Toronto Culinary Guild’s Silver Ladle Award for her unique contribution to Ontario’s food industry, the Ontario Hostelry Institute’s gold award (2009) as a writer and author with a focus on Canada’s culinary heritage, YWCA Woman of Distinction for Culture in 2010 and gold in the literary category at the 2014 Arts Awards Waterloo Region.

Elizabeth Baird: A teacher at heart, I am never happier than when showcasing great Canadian recipes. My 20 years plus  as food editor of “Canadian Living” Magazine and more years as columnist for the “Toronto Star” and “Toronto Sun” have given me an appreciation for the deliciousness of Canada cooking with all its roots and diversity. Matt Basile: Matt is the creator of the Toronto-based street-food brand Fidel Gastro’s which originated as a pop-up selling street food in underground markets across the city. Basile operates one of Canada’s most recognizable food trucks and a street-food inspired cicchetti bar called Lisa Marie, and he is the host of the reality TV show Rebel Without a Kitchen. Basile has teamed up with his partner in life and business, Kyla Zanardi who is the book’s photographer. The two have spent their lives together making fun food and photographing it.

Nettie Cronish is a vegetarian and organic foods chef, culinary instructor and cookbook author.
